Week 6 - 3D

Week 6 Practical: Design Perspectives

This weeks design practical involved us selecting our favourite 3D design idea, and drafting and labeling two variations of this design to the following brief:

- Design 01: Design in a style that appeals to a community sports group
- Design 02: Design in a style that appeals to a fashion label
- Draft in your blog with hand drawings and notes
- Give each work a NAME and DESCRIPTION (max 50 words)

Design Idea 1:

As I will be making a dress for my 3D design, I have decided to design a tennis outfit as it meets the criteria of 'appealing to a community group'. Please see below:

Name: Lycra-wanda
Description: This design is breathable as it is made out of Lycra which allows this garment to be lightweight, breathable and quick drying. This will assist with sweat reduction. It is also semi-backless, whitch again assists keeping the design breathable and cool. The design incorporates hidden support around the bust by a built in support (from the way the garment is sewn). The way the garment is crosses at the back further assists with support to the bust. The colours black and fluro green give it a contemporary edge. The garment has a zipper which has been placed there for asthetic appeal as well as functionality. Easy access on and off ;-) The design has shorts which is more practical for a sports person over a skirt.

Design Idea 2:

This design idea will appeal to a fashion label. I have utilized the same design concept from the above design, but adapted it to more of a contemporary fashion garment.

Name: Kay La Vi Designs - By Kath Harvey :-) Designs from the Field...
Description: This dress is made out of a thick elastane/cotton fabric. It has a silk sheen to it intimating lycra (Lycra wouldn't work for this dress design as the fabric is too thin). The design is different to the tennis outfit as it has a is a dress rather than a body suit. It still incorporates the front zipper as well as the built in support with the addition of built in padding around the bust for the extra touch (as the fabric is stretch and will flatten the chest so the dress design has that sexy edge to it hahaha) See Dress design below.

Group Exercise: Design Perspectives

For this exercise the group was asked to rate your two designs on a scale of 1 - 10 based on the following criteria:

1. Accuracy in addressing the brief
2. Immediate visual appeal
3. Cross generational appeal
4. Artistic depth

I will wait to see what scores I get from the group and post them when I receive comments.

The following is a clip of a new tennis outfit design by Adidas. This design incorporates three similarities to my design:

1. Breathable fabric;
2. built in support for the bust;
3. body suit (this Adidas incorporates a skirt over the top to make the dress more feminine); and
4. Bright yellow (season trend is bring pinks, purples, oranges and greens)

Week 6 - 2D

Week 6 - Design Perspectives

Practical:

Today we had to design two designs for the heading for the up coming exhibition. The heading had to address the following brief:

Draft 2 headline designs for the student exhibition based on:
Title: Ten Squared (written numerically)
Tagline: Art from the Hot lands

These are my two design ideas:

Idea 1: Non-Profit organization

This design incorporates both the tag line, and the title (around the sun). I used photoshop as my media to create this heading. I utilized the render filter to create a glow around the sun to emphasize the Northern Territorian climate. I used earthy colours to further emphasize the dryness of the desert. Finally, I incorporated the NT Government's logo inside the sun to add to the theme of the heading (celebrating NT's centenary).

Idea 2: Design Industry Client
This is just a rough sketch of a design idea for the exhibition heading. The idea incorporates the tag line as well as the title of the exhibition.

The colours will be simple and clear and the text will be consistent with the branding of the company.

The emphasis for this heading will be placed on the land scape of the Red Centre. The design will utilise the outline of Uluru rock formation and the redness of the sand. The sun will be in the top right hand corner. The colors will be block to enable good monochrome printing. The text will be the same as the CDU logo to keep it consistent with CDU branding guidelines.

I think I would change to design of the 10 squared text when I refine this idea.

Group Exercise:

For the group exersise we had to rate each students favourite heading design based on the criteria given. The results were the following:

Warwick:
Accuracy in addressing the brief - 6
Immediate visual appeal – 4.8
Cross generational appeal - 3
Suitability for print – 2.8
Suitability for web - 4
Monochromatic suitability -
Simplicity – 3.3

Sunita:
Accuracy in addressing the brief – 5.3
Immediate visual appeal - 5
Cross generational appeal – 4.6
Suitability for print – 2.8
Suitability for web – 5.8
Monochromatic suitability – 1.8
Simplicity – 4.3

Rachel:

Suitability for print – 5.5
Suitability for web – 5.6
Monochromatic suitability – 7.3
Simplicity – 5.5

Mark:
Accuracy in addressing the brief – 6.1
Immediate visual appeal – 5.1
Cross generational appeal – 5.8
Suitability for print – 6.8
Suitability for web – 7.3
Monochromatic suitability - 6
Simplicity – 6.6

Both Rachel's and Mark's heading design recieved the most favourable scores. I believe this is because they kept the idea simple, but utilised text, colour and graphics effectively to get the theme/idea across.

The feature in Rachel's design was incorporating a Brolga bird between the title and the tagline to depict a Northern Territorian feel, and Mark utilized colour (earthy orange) to represent the NT.

The following video is a time lapsed video of  the process of designing a logo from start to finish. THe designer shows the audience how his idea begins (seeing him sketch out rough ideas on a sketch pad) to the refining of the idea, to the creation of the logo design on Adobe Illustrator. I found this video useful as it demonstrates how an original concept that is roughly sketch on a piece of paper can be turned into a proper digital logo on Illustrator.

Week 05 - 3D

Week 5 - Challenging Assumptions

Group Exercise:

Today two students were asked to present to the group their 3D concepts for the exhibition. The group provided feed back on the two design ideas and the following points were raised:

Sunita's 3D design - Traditional Timor House

- The hut will be built on 4 stumps;
- Body made out of polystyrene;
- Roof designs like a triangular prism;
- Warwick further added that a sharp un-cerated knife should be used to cut the polystyrene to avoid flaking.

Maha's 3D design - Lamp with interchangeable side panels

- Lamp can be for either bedroom or lounge room;
- the lamp will have inter changeable panels on each side that will be printed with various images; and
- Mirrors may be used to deflect light onto certain parts of the lamp.

Practical:

Today's practical involved the use applying the same challenging techniques to our 3D design. I do not have any sketches that I can add to this blog as of yet but I will try and use images to get my idea across.

Assumption: One assumption I have made about physically making a dress is that I will actually get it made on time.

Challenge: Considering I am a beginner at sewing, I have looked at another type of dresses I can make which will be a lot simpler that a Haute Couture dramatic out there fashion statement. See example below.

The following is a video of the Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011 fashion show. I have watched so many of these clips and this is where I get most of my ideas from for my designs. I love the extremely exaggerated designs and the use of colour and eccentric style of this designer. Unfortunately I dont think I will be able to create what I have in mind for the exhibition but I will still put all my ideas into my portfolio.

The two other options would be either making a ball gown, or a cocktail dress.

Refinement: After jotting down everything involved with making the original dress style, I have decided to design and endeavor to make a ball gown.

Example of a style more simple:

Week 02 - 2D

Week 2  Expanding your Knowledge:

Group Exercise:

Going over the presentation from this week, the group continued to discuss the utilization of different sources, and how to assess the particular information obtained from these sources.

Practical - Design Choices:

Creating a Blog background

The practical for this week involved selecting a design background for our blog and addressing the following criteria:

- Shape;
- Media; and
- Style.

Any tools/ Materials could be used to design the blog background.

Background 1:

Shape - Original photo..symertrical blur...
Media - Photoshop CS5
Style - Pop art maybe...

I got the inspiration for the bright colours from the pop art image of Mona Lisa, to the left.

I also found this tutorial clip on youtube demonstrating how to make your own photos look like pop art. I think I will try it...maybe use this for my label idea for.

Week 03 - 3D

Week 3 - Creative Thinking techniques:

Group Exercise:

Today the class looked at generating ideas for an echo friendly mode of transport. The group decided to design a mode of transport simular to the Segway. Please see below:

The above YouTube video demonstrates how the Segway is operated, for example, how to go forward, backward, side ways. This is what the groups design will be modeled from.

Practical:

This option was chosen due to to its versatility. The following elements that could be incorporated into the design:
- Ability to be solar powered meaning it will be eco friendly;
- Appealing design, for example shade feature
- Family Friendly, duel Segway or family segway. Allows for mums/dads to drive with the kids in the     back. And Finally;
- Safe to environment and community, by restricting the speed limit to discourage young hoons.

The name options included:
- Ecocaddy;
- Eco Nomik; and
- e'Co.

Option 1-The 'E-Cab'. The E-Cab would resemble an asian taxi. I like this picture because the design incorporates the multiple passanger element that I like. I would put solar panals on the roof so that it will generate its own power as it is being used. The only problem is that i'm not too sure how it would work like the Segway when it has more than two wheels. perhaps add a small motor.

Option 2: The 'EecMob' is simular to the E-Cab however it will incorporate both  small motor aswell as a push peddle mechanism for when the power is running low. In these instances, the power would be used to get the car started, however it but would then turn off as soon as the can has got enough momentum to be self peddled.

The car would use a combination of fuel, electricty, solar power and manual power.

Week 03 - 2D

Week 3 - Creative thinking exercise (Absent)

Group Exercise - Generating Design Ideas, Inventing Options:

This week the students were put into groups to discuss to concept of 'REDUCE, from the books Laws of Simplicity. They were then  and asked to select two objects that could be created into a specific 2D design. The two words agreed upon were 'Money' and 'Spaceship'.

Money: Currency, Legal tender, Colourfull, Plastic, payment for goods and services.

Above image sourced from: http://www.howtomakemoneyfast.com.au/images/australian-money.jpg

Above Image sourced from: http://year5.skola.edu.mt/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/space-ship.jpg

Spaceship: Space, Earth, Starwars, fuel, NASA, money.

The idea I had was design currency for the future when/if people could live sufficiently in space. The currency option is listed below:

Everything will be digital. Physical 'money' will no longer excist. People will be paid directly onto a micro chip. These micro chip bracelets  would be scanned every-time you purchase goods and/or services. These wrist bands would be permanently attached to the person to ensure they are kept secure and not lost. The wrist band would be a combination of the two following images:

The wrist band would be made out of silicone simular to this Power Balance wrist band.

Above image sourced from: http://i1-news.softpedia-static.com/images/news2/Power-Balance-Silicone-Wristbands-for-Increased-Energy-Flexibility-and-Balance-2.jpg

All wrist bands would have a barcode which would be scanned for all purchases.

Exhibition: Also this week, the students were asked to come up with three design ideas for the upcoming exhibition.

The three ideas I have chosen are similar in theme as they are all related to fashion design. I am aiming on focusing the majority of my work into exploring new ideas/trends  for a fashion collection. I will begin to sketch rough designs, then refine them and end up with a sophisticated high quality folio showcasing my designs (for my folio componant of this coarse). I will then choose my favourite design and create it.

Fashion piece options:
- A Haute Cature dress (something extremely exaggerated and over the top);
- Contemporary Ball gown; or
- Cocktail dress.

A cocktail dress would be the simplest to produce as there would be less fabric and less intricacies. The Haute Cature dress would be the most fun to create because it will allow for extreme creativity and pizazz however i believe extremely difficult to pull off. The Contemporary ball gown is probably what I will choose as it does allow for a lot of creativity, but will still be challenging to produce.

Sketches and ideas will follow in the upcoming weeks.

Practical:

The practical for this week involved us drafting 3 design concepts for our individual exhibition portfolio following the guidelines below:

Use any tools you wish
Put the results and a paragraph of description in your blog
Invent 2 different options for each of the 3 designs
Describe how each of these options differ in
o Shape
o Media
o Style
OR any 3 criteria of your own choosing – list these criteria clearly

My 3 ideas were:

Design 1. A business card;

Option 1-

Option 2:

 - Shape: These two designs do not differ in shape as both options will be standard business card size.
Media: These two designs were both created using photoshop however when making my final design I will use Illustrator.
Style: The style of these two designs are almost the same however I have made a few changes. The first being I have taken the word 'Designs' out from option 1. I have also changed the background colour and changed the positioning of the Email and Mobile text.  I have also changed the font size of "By Katherine. L. Harvey" as I feel it looks more affective having my name (the designers name) larger. I feel there is too much empty space at the top so I might move all the text slightly higher. Option 2 also includes a border. I like it better with a boarder.

Week 02 - 3D

Week 2 - Expanding your knowledge:

Practical - Design Student Shoulder Bag:

In this class, the students were asked to design a student shoulder bag. As I was absent, I have read over fellow students blogs and drawn up a rough shoulder bag design using photoshop. Please see below:

Shape - Rectangular sholder bag with triangular flap with buckle to close.
Media -  Waterproof nylon outer, thick satin interior.
Style - Modern shape, slim, perfect for laptop and books.

 I got the idea from this Jimmy Choo leather handbag. I changed the straps and the clasp. I thought that a standard clasp would be functional for a students sholder bag.
http://www.fashionfuss.com/jimmy-choo-lucy-leather-shoulder-bag/

I also found this video on YouTube. It gives a brief demonstration of how to design a handbag using specific fashion design computer software. it allows the designer to add textruee, colour, and draw the basic shapes to produce their designs digitally. I think it is an extremely effective program for designers.

Week 05 - 2D

Week 5 - Challenging Assumptions

Group Exercise:

Mark discussed with the group the concept of challenging ideas. He gave us a scenario where we had to make assumptions about a situation, challenge these assumptions and come up with an effective solution for a desired outcome. He then showed us how we can apply these techniques to our design concepts.
The practical for today demonstrates the concept of making an assumption about my 2D idea, challenging the assumption, and making a refinement to the assumption to improve my design.

Practical:

At the end of this year, I am hoping to design and create a dress for my 3D component for the Exhibition. My 2D component was going to be my trade sketches and design illustrations to be presented alongside my design. As my designs do not incorporate any images on the fabric, simply submitting my back up to the 3D component was not considered adequate. Therefore, with help from Mark and the group, I came up with the idea of designing a brand name/label for my 2D work.

Assumption 1: The brand name ‘Kay.La.Vee’ reflects the overall style of my ‘brand’.

Challenge: I will challenge this assumption by brainstorming two other brand names and analyse the pros and cons for each.

Brand Name
Pros
Cons
Kay.La.Vee
-       Feminine sounding name;
-       Simple and catchy;
-       Design of brand name could be designed very feminine and ‘pretty’
The spelling of ‘Vee’ in the name could make it seem amateur.

Gorilla Press
Masculine sounding name.
Name comes across edgy and catchy.
K Designs
Professional sounding.
Too simple.

From the three brand names brainstormed, I have decided to stay with my original name idea of ‘Kay.La.Vee’.

Assumption 2: The text/font used for the label will suit the actual brand name.

Challenge: The way I will challenge this assumption is by testing different fonts that I like to compare which font I believe suits the brand name most effectively.

Selected font
Selected font for brand name
Apple Chancery

Kay.La.Vee
Baskerville Old Face

Kay.La.Vee
Bauhuas 93

Kay.La.Vee
Birch Std

Kay.La.Vee
Charlemagne STD

Kay.La.Vee
Cochin – Bold Italic

Kay.La.Vee
Edwardian Script

Kay.La.Vee
Mistral

Kay.La.Vee
Mona Lisa Solid  ITC TT
Kay.La.Vee

Refinements:

I have decided that the font Edwardian Script best suits the branding for my label. I have made the following refinements to the actual text for the my changes are the following:

1.     I have taken the full stops from in between the three words and have replaced with a space.
2.     I have changed the spelling of the third word from ‘Vee’ to ‘Vi’.
3.     End result:

  Kay La Vi.

I found this example of a simple fashion label that I liked.

DSC_0092.jpg

There is obviously a lot more work to go into my label but this is just a first draft of my idea.

I found this video on youtube. It is an advertisement for the brand Burberry. I was a bit inspired by this as the Burberry label is simple and black and white (in this advertisement). This style is something that I want for my label.
