Week 05 - 3D

Week 5 - Challenging Assumptions

Group Exercise:

Today two students were asked to present to the group their 3D concepts for the exhibition. The group provided feed back on the two design ideas and the following points were raised:

Sunita's 3D design - Traditional Timor House

- The hut will be built on 4 stumps;
- Body made out of polystyrene;
- Roof designs like a triangular prism;
- Warwick further added that a sharp un-cerated knife should be used to cut the polystyrene to avoid flaking.

Maha's 3D design - Lamp with interchangeable side panels

- Lamp can be for either bedroom or lounge room;
- the lamp will have inter changeable panels on each side that will be printed with various images; and
- Mirrors may be used to deflect light onto certain parts of the lamp.

Practical:

Today's practical involved the use applying the same challenging techniques to our 3D design. I do not have any sketches that I can add to this blog as of yet but I will try and use images to get my idea across.

Assumption: One assumption I have made about physically making a dress is that I will actually get it made on time.

Challenge: Considering I am a beginner at sewing, I have looked at another type of dresses I can make which will be a lot simpler that a Haute Couture dramatic out there fashion statement. See example below.

The following is a video of the Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011 fashion show. I have watched so many of these clips and this is where I get most of my ideas from for my designs. I love the extremely exaggerated designs and the use of colour and eccentric style of this designer. Unfortunately I dont think I will be able to create what I have in mind for the exhibition but I will still put all my ideas into my portfolio.

The two other options would be either making a ball gown, or a cocktail dress.

Refinement: After jotting down everything involved with making the original dress style, I have decided to design and endeavor to make a ball gown.

Example of a style more simple:

  1. Once again an good solid blog - bit skimpy in the group exercise. You documented well what went on, but the idea of the blog is to take it all a step further - explore the concepts more.

    serrated |ˈserˌātid; səˈrātid|
    adjective
    having or denoting a jagged edge; sawlike : a knife with a serrated edge.

    There is a dictionary on Macs, so it doesn't hurt to check spellink if you ain't shore.

    Good work - can't wait to see the actual design drafts soon.

  2. hate to nag....but....

    2 Assumptions and 2 Refinements were asked for. You've done a superb job for No.1

    Please stretch a little further and go again for No.2!
