Group Exercise - Generating Design Ideas, Inventing Options:
This week the students were put into groups to discuss to concept of 'REDUCE, from the books Laws of Simplicity. They were then and asked to select two objects that could be created into a specific 2D design. The two words agreed upon were 'Money' and 'Spaceship'.
Money: Currency, Legal tender, Colourfull, Plastic, payment for goods and services.

Spaceship: Space, Earth, Starwars, fuel, NASA, money.
The idea I had was design currency for the future when/if people could live sufficiently in space. The currency option is listed below:
Everything will be digital. Physical 'money' will no longer excist. People will be paid directly onto a micro chip. These micro chip bracelets would be scanned every-time you purchase goods and/or services. These wrist bands would be permanently attached to the person to ensure they are kept secure and not lost. The wrist band would be a combination of the two following images:
The wrist band would be made out of silicone simular to this Power Balance wrist band.

All wrist bands would have a barcode which would be scanned for all purchases.

Exhibition: Also this week, the students were asked to come up with three design ideas for the upcoming exhibition.
The three ideas I have chosen are similar in theme as they are all related to fashion design. I am aiming on focusing the majority of my work into exploring new ideas/trends for a fashion collection. I will begin to sketch rough designs, then refine them and end up with a sophisticated high quality folio showcasing my designs (for my folio componant of this coarse). I will then choose my favourite design and create it.
Fashion piece options:
- A Haute Cature dress (something extremely exaggerated and over the top);
- Contemporary Ball gown; or
- Cocktail dress.
A cocktail dress would be the simplest to produce as there would be less fabric and less intricacies. The Haute Cature dress would be the most fun to create because it will allow for extreme creativity and pizazz however i believe extremely difficult to pull off. The Contemporary ball gown is probably what I will choose as it does allow for a lot of creativity, but will still be challenging to produce.
Sketches and ideas will follow in the upcoming weeks.
Practical:
The practical for this week involved us drafting 3 design concepts for our individual exhibition portfolio following the guidelines below:
• Use any tools you wish
• Put the results and a paragraph of description in your blog
• Invent 2 different options for each of the 3 designs
• Describe how each of these options differ in
o Shape
o Media
o Style
OR any 3 criteria of your own choosing – list these criteria clearly
My 3 ideas were:
Design 1. A business card;
Option 1-

Option 2:

- Shape: These two designs do not differ in shape as both options will be standard business card size.
- Media: These two designs were both created using photoshop however when making my final design I will use Illustrator.
- Style: The style of these two designs are almost the same however I have made a few changes. The first being I have taken the word 'Designs' out from option 1. I have also changed the background colour and changed the positioning of the Email and Mobile text. I have also changed the font size of "By Katherine. L. Harvey" as I feel it looks more affective having my name (the designers name) larger. I feel there is too much empty space at the top so I might move all the text slightly higher. Option 2 also includes a border. I like it better with a boarder.
Nice one Kath. I think "cocktail" is one word. The PRACTICAL seems to be an extension of the GROUP EXERCISE - have another look at the Power Point - try to address each week's stuff literally.
ReplyDeleteGood ideas in what you presented though - well done there.
The card design is lovely.
ReplyDeleteWhat I see here is ONE design concept with 2 options.
You will need to do the same again with 2 new concepts to complete this blog.
Well done so far.
